Maltravieso Cave
Thursday 23th June 2012
In 1951 people worked here in a
quarry. They obtained stone before blasting the ground.
One day after one explosion they found some remains of human beings and
some pottery.
They called the judge and a forensic doctor. They thought that
these remains came from to the Spanish civil war.
However, the head of the Archaeological museum of Caceres
came here to see the remains. His name was Carlos Callejo, and he was the true
discoverer of the Cave, because he realised that these remains didn’t come from
the Spanish Civil War and that they were older than that time.
He tried to stop the explosions, and it took him a long time before the
quarry was closed.
Carlos began to inspect the cave, and studied what he found inside.
There were a lot of wall paintings and some carvings. Most of the paintings
were handprints. They were dated back to between 15 and 35, 000 years ago. The
importance of these paintings transformed the Maltravieso Cave
into an archaeological site.
