All in vain
A popular type of still life was know as a "vanitas" (vanitas is Latin for "vanity"). These were meant to stop you being too proud by reminding you that success is only temporary and everyone dies in the end. In this example , a beam of light points to some flowers symbol of fragileness, and musical instruments, which stand for entertainemt. But time passes, and the shadow of death hangs over everything.
