ANCIENT ROME. GLADIATOR GAMES

RETIARIUS OR NET-FIGHTER

He was the most vulnerable of all gladiators. He  had only a shoulder-guard (galerus) on his left arm to protect him. He used his left hand for his trident (a harpoon for tuna fishing) and dagger. He held a net in his right hand. Lightly armed he moved quickly. He customarily fought the heavily-armed secutor.

SECUTOR OR PURSUER
He wore a helmet with a crest and carried a sword and heavy shield. His left leg was well protected by a leather or metal guard. Leather bands covered his arms often only at the wrists and elbows. Heavily armed he was well protected but slow in action

MURMILLO or FISH FIGHTER

He wore a helmet with a crest or fish-shaped logo. Murmillo is Greek for a type of fish. He carried a sword and small shield. His chest was unprotected by armor but his right sword arm and left leg, the most vulnerable limbs in a fight, were covered. Often both legs had coverings.
